01.08.2022

Environment Energy and Climate Change Programme #environment EMPI

The Minister of Climate and the Environment, with the support of the National Fund for Environmental Protection and Water Management, as the Operator of the Environment, Energy and Climate Change Program, informs about the conclusion of a contract for co-financing the project “Bird Horizons – active preservation of endangered bird species in Lublin Polesie”.

The project beneficiary is Poleski National Park (Poleski Park Narodowy).

About the project

The project received funding in the call for proposals for Implementation of ecosystem management plans under the Environment, Energy and Climate Change Programme, in the area of Environmental status of ecosystems improved.

The total cost is approximately EUR 485 thousand (PLN 2 million) and the requested amount of funding is approximately EUR 412 thousand (PLN 1.7 million).

It is co-financed in 85% by the Environment, Energy and Climate Change Program of the European Economic Area Financial Mechanism (of which 85% comes from the EEA Financial Mechanism and 15% from the national budget).

The aim of the project is to actively protect endangered species of charcoal birds in Polesie Lubelskie by implementing a protection program to maintain and strengthen the breeding population of species covered by the project and to increase awareness of birds protection and their habitats. The increasing drought and the expansion of the wetlands, as well as intensive agriculture, cause the unstable situation of charcoal birds. Active protection of the broods will provide protection from laying eggs through releasing young specimens, to maintaining habitats in a proper condition so that the birds can create nests in the future. During the implementation of the project, information and educational campaigns will be carried out to increase the awareness and knowledge of the birds protection and their habitats in Polesie Lubelskie and social awareness of the biodiversity of Polesie’s ecosystems.

Partnership

The project is conducted with the Norwegian partner Norsk Ornitologisk Forening/BirdLife Norway and Bird Horizons Foundation.

Implementation period

The agreement for the project's co-financing was signed on 10th November 2021 and the planned completion date is December 31, 2023.
