12.03.2024
The cooperation with Ukraine in the energy sector was one of the topics addressed during the 9th plenary session of the Polish-Ukrainian Intergovernmental Commission on Economic Cooperation in which Mr. Miłosz Motyka, Deputy Minister of Climate and Environment, participated on 11 March 2024 in Lviv.
The session of the Commission chaired by Mr. Krzysztof Hetman, Minister of Economic Development and Technology, and Mr. Iryna Vereshchuk, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Reintegration of Temporarily Occupied Territories of Ukraine, was preceded by the talks between Deputy Minister Miłosz Motyka and Mr. Yevheniy Fedorenko, Deputy Minister of Energy of Ukraine, and the Deputy Minister of Environmental Protection and Natural Resources of Ukraine.
Russia uses energy raw materials as economic and political impact factors; therefore, diversification of the energy mix is important in the energy transition process. Poland has supported and will continue to support Ukraine in this process
- Deputy Minister Miłosz Motyka stressed.
The issues of energy security were addressed, including sanctions on fuel imports from Russia and diversification of supplies to become independent of energy raw materials from Russia. As part of the bilateral talks, we addressed the issues of cooperation in the sector of crude oil and liquid fuels and the storage of reserves in the Polish territory, the prospects for cooperation in the gas sector to enable Polish companies to use Ukrainian storage facilities, as well as the involvement of Polish companies in the gas prospecting and production operations in Ukraine.
Deputy Minister Miłosz Motyka stressed the efforts taken to restore and operate the Rzeszów-Chmielnicka interconnector and the continuous support of the Polish TSO to safeguard the security of the Ukrainian power grid:
Ensuring the full use of the existing interconnector must be a priority. In each individual case, any future discussions on increasing the transmission capacity of interconnectors will be informed by the real needs confirmed by detailed market-related and technical data, as well the Polish evaluation of their impact on Poland’s energy security.
The significance of the development of RES for the energy transition of Poland and Ukraine was also stressed. After the end of the war, Poland can share its experiences in the development of offshore wind energy; this met with a large interest on the part of Ukraine.
The Deputy Minister declared the readiness to cooperate, assist and support at the international level the Ukrainian initiatives related to nuclear energy, especially in relation to the situation at the Zaporizhia Nuclear Power Plant. In this context, he stressed the importance of nuclear safety for the public and the natural environment throughout the region.
Poland is keen to talk about the environment, to ensure that environmental damage is well estimated and, in the future, to support Ukraine in demanding financial compensations from the Russian Federation, which are certainly substantial and affect all of us
- the Undersecretary of State pointed out in his talks with the Deputy Minister of Environmental Protection and Natural Resources of Ukraine.
