Environmental Protection Inspectorate supports Lithuania in monitoring air pollution

In connection with the tire waste fire in Alytus in Southern Lithuania, the representatives of the Polish Environmental Protection Inspectorate set out to support Lithuania, acting on orders of the Minister of Environment Henryk Kowalczyk.

On Saturday, 19 October, the Lithuanian Ministry of Environment asked the Polish Ministry of Environment for support in monitoring air pollution in connection with the tyre waste fire in Alytus.

“The fire broke out on Wednesday in the waste treatment plant, the firefighting is still in progress, the Lithuanian side estimates that the fire might burn for another 3-4 days. The mobile laboratory of the Lithuanian Environmental Agency is not equipped to measure emissions,” said Minister Henryk Kowalczyk.

“I ordered Polish services to support Lithuania on Saturday. Two teams from Olsztyn and Krakow were sent to the site, along with a specialised mobile laboratory, which enables them to measure emissions of pollutants, especially particulate matter. This is the first such opportunity for Polish environmental protection services,” the Minister added.
