Exchange of experience between Iceland and Poland in the sphere of wetlands' restoration for biodiversity and climate

The Beneficiary

The National Society for the Protection of Birds

About the project

The aim of the project conducted by the National Society for the Protection of Birds was to strengthen contacts and bilateral cooperation between the National Society for the Protection of Birds (Poland) and Fuglavend BirdLife Iceland (Iceland), for the secondary irrigation of degraded peatlands.

The innovative nature of the restoration of peatlands requires an international exchange of experience in the field of used methods of initial identification and selection of sites for restoration, estimation of GHG emission reductions, practical application of secondary irrigation techniques, monitoring and support in the restoration of the biodiversity of peatlands, and creation of carbon credits with the prospect of sale on the decentralised market (VCM). To this end, both countries carried out work conducted by experts, prepared guidelines, organized practical workshops for specialists in Poland and a conference in Iceland. The exchange of experience was the basis for defining, describing and promoting good practices at international level, from which both countries benefit.

The project received 100% funding from the European Economic Area Financial Mechanism 2014-2021 and the Norwegian Financial Mechanism 2014-2021 under the Environment, Energy and Climate Change Programme under the Bilateral Cooperation Fund.

Total cost of the project 96 039.00 PLN.
