Flood-related activities of the Ministry of Climate and Environment

23.09.2024

The Ministry of Climate and Environment and its subordinate units undertake a range of activities related to securing the infrastructure and supervised areas as well as support local emergency headquarters and services in their daily work. The Ministry is also working on support programmes for local authorities affected by the flood.

Flood-related activities of the Ministry of Climate and Environment
  • On 19 September 2024, the call for intervention grants for local authorities, fire brigades and crisis management centres was launched in the Dolnośląskie Voivodship. The local authorities can use the funds received for refinancing of the costs incurred to date, as well as for ongoing expenditure, such as the purchase of power generators, dehumidifiers, sandbags, current protection of buildings and eliminating the effects of flooding in environmental protection and water management facilities.
  • On 20 September 2024, the Minister of Climate and Environment submitted a draft regulation to the Minister of the Interior and Administration to address the problem of waste transport and storage in areas affected by the state of natural disaster. The draft refers to ensuring that in areas affected by flooding additional measures can be taken in the scope of management of the waste generated by the flood.
  • We have received information from the electricity system operators (as at 19 September 2024) about more than 10,000 customers inhabiting the area of Dolnośląskie, Opolskie, Śląskie, Małopolskie and Lubuskie Voiodships who are deprived of electricity supply.
  • The environmental infrastructure is monitored on an ongoing basis by the Regional Inspection of Environmental Protection.
  • Flood recovery work is in progress in the forest districts through which the floods have passed. Retention facilities are secured. In particular, the continuity of streams is restored (diverting water into natural watercourses). Clean-up work is in progress mainly on forest roads. In view of the moving flood wave, preventive and precautionary measures against potential flooding are carried out, in particular in relation to the State Forest buildings at risk from the threatened Forest Districts.
  • With reference to the information provided by Professor  Krzysztof Galos, PhD Eng, the Chief National Geologist, Undersecretary of State at the Ministry of Climate and Environment, a rising threat of landslides becoming active should be expected in the next few weeks. Under the current circumstances, a risk of hydrogeological hazards associated with flash floods also occurs, including, in particular, groundwater contamination.
