•    Poland will hold the Presidency of the Council of the European Union first after the election of the new European Commission.

•    Polish Presidency of the EU Council

Minister Paulina Hennig-Kloska emphasised during the meeting that the Polish Presidency in the first half of 2025 must fit into a new political cycle.

The European Commission is about to be appointed, and the new Parliament will start its work. It is difficult at this point to predict the dynamics of the work on open legislative acts and the timing and direction of the European Commission's new legislative proposals. Nevertheless, we are ready to steer the work on any new initiatives to be published by the European Commission

- said Minister Hennig-Kloska.

Poland's upcoming Presidency of the Council of the European Union, commencing on 1 January and concluding on 30 June 2025, is a significant period that will shape the EU's agenda. The activities of the Presidency will be primarily guided by the work of EU institutions on legislative projects and non-legislative acts, international climate-energy-environmental events, priority subjects chosen by the Presidency, and potential unforeseen events, particularly those of a crisis nature.

As part of its responsibilities, the Polish Presidency will play a crucial role in coordinating the EU's position for various international environmental agreements. This includes the Triple Conference of the Parties to the Stockholm, Rotterdam and Basel Conventions, the Conference of the Parties to CITES, the Conference of the Parties to the Ramsar Convention, and sessions of the UNFCCC and the Aarhus Convention.

Energy security

The Minister also assured that one of the priorities of the Polish Presidency of the EU Council would be to ensure the EU's energy security, respecting the principles of a fair energy transition.

The ambitious goals of the EU's energy and climate policy require social acceptance and solidarity. Therefore, the Polish Presidency will pay attention to a fair, inclusive and sustainable energy transition, as well as to maintaining a balance between energy security and affordability of energy for consumers and businesses and climate policy

- said the Minister
