Networking on SPA/ASCI/IBA for breeding and migratory birds in Poland, Iceland and Norway

About the project

The project was conducted by The National Society for the Protection of Birds and received funding in the call for proposals for Implementation of ecosystem management plans under the Environment, Energy and Climate Change Programme, the Bilateral Cooperation Fund. The total cost of the project was approximately 44 015.35 PLN.

The aim of the project was to create an international partnership, including organisations from Poland, Norway and Iceland, which would allow the transfer of knowledge and experience between the countries belonging to the East Atlantic Flyway (hereinafter: EAF), taking into account legislative and institutional differences.

This need arises from the fact that the current population trends of many species of breeding birds of Northern Europe (migrating to Western Europe and Africa via the so-called East-Atlantic Migration Route) are negative and decreasing. This means that the population of these species is constantly decreasing, and the related forecasts for the coming years do not indicate that this trend will change.

The result of the project was the development of common methodological approaches for the management and monitoring of Special Protection Areas (SPA/ASCI/IBA - depending on the protection network region), which can be applied in other EAF countries, including those beyond Europe.

Partnership

The project is conducted with the Icelandic partner Fuglavernd 2020 as well as with the Norwegian Ornithological Society.

Implementation period

The project was implemented for the between 12 May 2021 and 31 December 2022
