16.12.2024
Minister Paulina Hennig-Kloska attended the Energy Council of the European Union, where she presented information on the Polish Presidency and its priorities in the Council of the EU in the first half of 2025. The meeting, held on 16 December 2024 in Brussels, which also covered current topics of the Energy Council, was also attended by Deputy Minister for Climate and Environment Krzysztof Bolesta.
Over the next six months, we will be focusing on 3 key priorities in our work. The first is of course security, which is the watchword of the Polish Presidency. One of the topics we will want to discuss is energy security, including strengthening security in the Baltic Sea. Another priority is the competitiveness and its improvement for our industry, especially its energy-intensive sectors. The third priority is Ukraine: we will talk about the reconstruction of Ukraine, how to support it over the next months and how to speed up the accession talks
- said Minister Paulina Hennig-Kloska.
The Polish Presidency will also take stock of the state of implementation of the REPowerEU objectives, including with regard to aiming for a full cessation of Russian fossil fuel imports to the EU.
We also look forward to the Communication on the Clean Industrial Deal (CID), which will help us focus on the problem of the declining competitiveness of the EU economy. As the Presidency, we would like to initiate a discussion on the problems of the EU economy, the high energy prices, and dependence on imports of key green technologies
- said Minister Hennig-Kloska.
Poland also intends to hold a discussion on how best to help Ukraine in the coming years, how to rebuild its energy system and how to help it secure material supplies and electricity.
We also want to make progress in the accession talks in the energy sector, which has made advances in the adoption of EU legislation
- said Minister Hennig-Kloska.
On the sidelines of the Council, Minister Paulina Hennig-Kloska also held a number of bilateral meetings. She met with, among others, the Swedish Minister for Energy and Entrepreneurship Ebba Busch, a German delegation headed by Philipp Nimmermann, State Secretary at the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action. She discussed Presidency issues and Polish priorities with the Slovak Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Economy Denisa Sakova. Behind the scenes at the Council of the EU, the head of the MCE also met with Spain’s Minister for Ecological Transition and Demographic Challenges Sara Aagesen Muñoz and Lithuania’s Minister of Energy Žygimantas Vaičiūnas.
On 1 January 2025, Poland will take over the Presidency of the Council of the European Union. For the next six months, we will play a leadership and coordination role, chairing meetings at all levels of the Council and representing the Council of the European Union internationally.
The Ministry of Climate and Environment will chair two Councils:
- the Transport, Telecommunications and Energy Council (TTE), where our priorities will be energy security and the elimination of Russian fossil fuels from the EU energy market, as well as the competitiveness of the European economy;
- and the Environment Council (ENVI) where climate security and adaptation issues, and the fight against climate disinformation will play an important role.
