On 1 January 2025, Poland will take over the Presidency of the Council of the European Union. For the next six months, our country will play the role of a leader and coordinator, chairing meetings at the Council and representing the Council of the European Union internationally. On 20 December 2024, a conference was held at the Ministry of Climate and the Environment to present the priorities of the Ministry of Climate and the Environment for this period.

Priorities of the Ministry of Climate and Environment during the Polish Presidency of the Council of the EU

Priorities for the Transport, Telecommunications and Energy Council (TTE)

  1. Energy security
  2. Competitiveness
  3. Support for Ukraine

Priorities for the Environment Council (ENVI)

  1. Climate security and adaptation to climate change
  2. Combating climate disinformation
  3. Clean Industrial Deal

I am proud that I will be leading the team dealing with two Councils - the Transport, Telecommunications and Energy Council and the Environment Council. Poland will bring its optimism, development energy and the perspective of a country that has achieved success through hard work. We are planning a Presidency focused on solving concrete problems and seeking compromises on issues that unite Europe. We will focus on security, which is what we need today.  A multi-dimensional security

- emphasized Minister Paulina Hennig-Kloska.

As part of the Presidency, the Ministry of Climate and Environment will chair two Councils: the Transport, Telecommunications and Energy Council (TTE) and the Environment Council (ENVI).

Priorities for the Transport, Telecommunications and Energy Council (TTE)

The Polish Presidency will focus on solving problems that affect the lives of citizens. Security, competitiveness, and support for Ukraine are the priorities that will be addressed at the Transport, Telecommunications and Energy Council (TTE).

Ensuring energy and climate security is a prerequisite for economic growth and competitiveness. It depends on access to green technologies and critical raw materials for all Member States, the resilience of critical energy infrastructure and the development of electricity grids and solidarity between Member States. During the Polish Presidency, together with the European Commission, we will work towards this common goal.

The Ministry of Climate and Environment will also pay special attention to the work on the Clean Industrial Deal, in which we would like to see issues such as high energy prices, regulatory burdens and access to green technologies for decarbonisation addressed.

After 3 years of war, ending fuel supplies from Russia is a necessity. The Polish Presidency will focus on the implementation of the RePower EU objectives, aimed at the complete elimination of Russian fossil fuels from the EU, and on supporting Ukraine in rebuilding its energy sector and the accession negotiation process.

Priorities for the Environment Council (ENVI)

Climate security and adaptation to climate change, combating climate disinformation and the Clean Industrial Deal - these are the priorities for the Environment Council (ENVI).

The Polish Presidency will support EU’s efforts to prepare an adaptation plan for the EU. Natural disasters experienced by the Union. Recent floods in Poland, Spain and the region of Central Europe highlight the need to develop measures to limit the impact of increasingly dangerous weather events.

We want to better protect our societies and infrastructure against climate change-related disasters. Therefore, at the Environment Council (ENVI) we will focus on the issue of security in the face of climate change and building the resilience of the environment and societies in this regard

- emphasized Minister Paulina Hennig-Kloska.

Working on tools to combat fake news and climate disinformation challenging EU energy and climate policy is also a priority of the Presidency. We are also planning work to support investment in clean net-zero technologies and decarbonising the economy, which will be outlined in the Clean Industrial Deal.
