“Protection of valuable ecosystems of the Tuchola Forest” project

The Minister of Climate and Environment, supported by the National Fund for Environmental Protection and Water Management (NFEP&WM), as the Operator of the Environment, Energy and Climate Change Programme, informs of the conclusion of the agreement on co-financing “Protection of valuable ecosystems of the Tuchola Forest” project.

The beneficiary of the project is Woziwoda Forestry (Nadleśnictwo Woziwoda) The project is conducted with the Norwegian partner Norwegian Institute of Bioeconomy Research (NIBIO), Forest Inspectorate Tuchola and Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań.

The project obtained co-financing in the call for proposals Implementation of ecosystem management plans under the Environment, Energy and Climate Change Programme, in the area of Environmental status of ecosystems improved.

85% of the project’s costs are co-financed by the Environment, Energy and Climate Change Program under the EEA Grants. The total cost is approximately EUR 1.2 million (PLN 5.1 million) and the requested amount of funding is approximately EUR 1 million (PLN 4.3 million).

The aim of the project is to preserve valuable natural habitats, mainly to protect six local nature reserves, including: the Brda River Valley, Grzybna Swamps, Cisy on the Czerska Struga, Ustroń, Swamps by the Stążka River and the Springs of the Stążka River. In these areas, it is necessary to take active measures to restore distorted ecosystems, increase resistance to the climate change effects and protect endangered species and habitats. The implementation of the project will allow for the reduction and elimination of existing threats. It is planned for example to eliminate invasive alien species (bird cherry), plant native species (introduction of oak-hornbeam species, yew, service tree rowan), as well as maintain existing heathlands and improve wet habitats retentions and water conditions in several forests districts. In order to reduce human pressure on naturally valuable areas, it is planned to repair and modernize the tourist and educational infrastructure, which was partially destroyed by a hurricane in 2017.

As part of the project, it is planned to implement information and educational activities in the field of protection of valuable components of nature. The project will be complemented by workshops, competitions, educational classes, conferences and the publication regarding the project.

The planned completion date for the project is April 29, 2024.
