The Minister of Climate and Environment, with the support of the National Fund for Environmental Protection and Water Management, as the Operator of the Environment, Energy and Climate Change Programme, informs about the conclusion of an agreement for co-financing the project “Protection of waders with the use of grazing and small retention objects construction in the area of OSO Natura 2000 Knyszyńska Forest and Narew Upper River Valley”.

The project beneficiary is the Polish Society for Birds Protection (Polskie Towarzystwo Ochrony Ptaków).

About the project

The project received funding in the call for proposals for Implementation of ecosystem management plans under the Environment, Energy and Climate Change Programme, in the area of Environmental status of ecosystems improved.

The total cost is approximately EUR 950 thousand (PLN 4.1 million) and the requested amount of funding is approximately EUR 810 thousand (PLN 3.5 million).

It is co-financed in 85% by the Environment, Energy and Climate Change Programme of the European Economic Area Financial Mechanism (of which 85% comes from the EEA Financial Mechanism and 15% from the national budget). 

The project aims to protect waders (redshank,  lapwing and common snipe) in the Knyszyn Primeval Forest and Upper Narew Valley. The project involves the maintenance and development of grazing, fencing of the area and improvement of water relations (construction of small retention facilities). These activities will contribute to the restoration of the proper condition of breeding habitats of endangered waders. The project is extended by educational and promotional activities and campaigns to raise public awareness.

Partnership

The project is conducted with the Norwegian partner Norsk Ornitologisk Forening.

Implementation period

The agreement for the project's co-financing was signed on 9th December 2021 and the planned completion date is March 31, 2024.
