13.06.2023
The Carbon Sequestration Leadership Forum (CSLF) Technical Group Meeting and CCUS Development Workshop in Central and Eastern Europe took place in Warsaw on 13 and 14 June 2023, as part of an international initiative to support and develop CO2 Capture, Utilization and Storage (CCUS) technologies.
The event was hosted and co-organised by the Ministry of Climate and Environment, financed by the EEA Financial Mechanism Bilateral Cooperation Fund and the Norwegian Financial Mechanism 2014-2021.
The meeting and workshops were attended by experts from all over the world, as well as representatives of numerous organizations, research institutions and companies involved in the development of CCUS. The Polish side was represented by representatives of the Ministry of Climate and Environment, the University of Mining and Metallurgy in Krakow, the National Geological Institute – National Research Institute, the Main Mining Institute, the Oil and Gas Institute – National Research Institute, the WiseEuropa Foundation, as well as the energy, cement and metallurgy industry.
The deliberations of the CSLF technical group were opened by the Deputy Minister of Climate and Environment, Chief Geologist of the Country, Piotr Dziadzio. He outlined the most important CCUS activities carried out in Poland, including the work on the amendment of the geological and mining law and the activities of the CO2 capture, storage and use technology development team.
During the meeting, foreign projects related to the intensification of hydrocarbon extraction, carbon dioxide storage, hubs and clusters were presented. The panel discussion discussed both the benefits and challenges of building industrial clusters and common infrastructure for CO2 transport and storage.
The importance and perspectives of research in the CCUS sector were also discussed during the workshop. After the presentation of the European Commission on the planned CCUS strategy at EU level, representatives of the cement and energy industries presented plans for building specific projects in the CEE region and shared their experiences during a panel discussion.
Finally, effective ways to share knowledge about CCUS technologies and build social acceptance for such projects were discussed. The workshop participants tried to answer questions on how to address public concerns about potential carbon leakage and how to deal with the so-called NIMBA (“not in my backyard”) phenomenon.
