07.03.2024

We invite you to participate in the consultations which will help work out the position of the Government of the Republic of Poland on the Communication from the European Commission to the European Parliament, the European Economic and Social Committee and the Committee of the Regions Securing our future Europe’s 2040 target and path to climate neutrality by 2050 building a sustainable, just and prosperous society (COM/2024/63 final).

Konsultacje Komunikatu Komisji Europejskiej na temat trajektorii dochodzenia do neutralności klimatycznej w 2050 r. z uwzględnieniem wskaźników na 2040 rok

On 6 February, the European Commission published its Communication which presents the trajectory for reaching climate neutrality by 2050, with consideration given to the 2040 targets.

The Communication describes three variants of greenhouse gas reduction with different levels of ambition: (1) a target of up to 80%; (2) at least 85% and 90% as a maximum; (3) at least 90% and 95% as a maximum. In its Communication, the Commission recommends the achievement of an indirect 2040 target of 90%.

The Communication indicates 8 building blocks which, according to the European Commission, should serve to achieve the 2040 target. Among others, they include: a resilient and decarbonised energy system for buildings, transport and industry; an industrial revolution with competitiveness based on research and innovation, circularity, resource efficiency, industrial decarbonisation and clean tech manufacturing at its core; the transition based on fairness, solidarity and effective social policy;  the development of infrastructure to deliver and to transport and store hydrogen and CO2.

The Ministry of Climate has started to work on an assessment of the proposal of the Commission and to prepare the position of the Government of the Republic of Poland on the document in question. We are keen to receive as broad a spectrum of opinions as possible; therefore, we invite all those interested to send their comments by 17 March 2024  to the address: cel2040@klimat.gov.pl.
