The European Week for Waste Reduction
22.11.2023
This year's edition of the European Week for Waste Reduction took place from 16-28 November
3Rs principle
The European Week for Waste Reduction (EWWR) is an annual campaign to raise awareness about waste prevention in Europe. The theme of this year's 15th edition is the popularisation of the '3Rs' principle:
- reduce,
- reuse,
- recycle,
on which the concept of a circular economy is based. This refers to the European Commission's proposal on packaging, which regulates its use and promotes the reduction and reuse of materials according to this principle.
CE projects in EEA Climate Programme
The EEA Climate Programme is implementing various CE initiatives as a result of the pilot call for Strengthened implementation of Circular Economy, which was a response to an identified need to strengthen the transformation towards a circular economy.
As a result, we are supporting, among others, the reconstruction of the water and sewage network of a bus wash and its expansion with the use of a closed water system, the preparation of an innovative method for the recovery of water from sewage and rainwater/snowmelt, which will be introduced as a pilot project in a company, the construction of a selective municipal waste collection point and a storage and repair hall, where the local community will be able to return unwanted items for reuse, the popularisation of natural building, based on locally available and low-processed materials, or the creation of a guide for building design in line with the CE principles. All projects include educational elements to raise awareness and knowledge of the circular economy. As you can see, these projects are fitting into the promoted 3Rs principle.
Circon - A guide to circularity in construction
You can also read about the 3R principle in the guide to circularity in construction, which was published a few weeks ago. It was created as part of one of our CE projects: CIRCON - The circular economy in construction: eco-design of circular buildings. In this unique handbook on the CE principles in building design, you will also find, among other things, information concerning the need and motivation to implement the CE principles, the objectives of circular design, the new role of constructors, designers, investors and users, as well as the most important tips and guidelines for circular building design.
Attention is also drawn to a number of interesting facts, including:
WATER RECYCLING
Recycling water in buildings can have a significant impact on water con-servation. According to the EPA, the average household can save more than 38 000 l of water per year by using water-efficient appliances and practices. In addition, capturing rainwater can save up to 50% of a building’s water needs. Graywater reuse can save up to 30% of a building’s water needs, while condensate* capture can save up to 10%
Take a look at the Guide, which is available on the Circon project website, as well as on the project's profile in the Programme Project Database.
