The Minister of Climate and Environment, supported by the National Fund for Environmental Protection and Water Management (NFEP&WM), as the Operator of the Environment, Energy and Climate Change Programme, informs of the conclusion of an agreement for co-financing the The investment program for the Zgierz Power Plant – building new generation units project.

The project is conducted by the PGE Energia Ciepła S. A.

About the project

The project obtain co-financing  in the call for proposals Construction/modernization of municipal heating systems and elimination of individual heat sources under the Environment, Energy and Climate Change Programme in the area of Improving energy efficiency and energy security.

The project is co-financed in almost 26 % by the Environment, Energy and Climate Change Program of the European Economic Area Financial Mechanism (of which 85% comes from the EEA Financial Mechanism and 15% from the national budget).

The total cost of the project is over PLN 95 million (over EUR 22 million), of which the maximum amount of co-financing is over PLN 21,6 million (over EUR 5 million).

Investment activities

The Project is aimed at reducing the negative environmental impact of the CHP plant in Zgierz through investment activities consisting in the construction of new high-efficiency cogeneration units and renewable energy source installations, as well as popularizing the availability of system heat in the city of Zgierz and promoting its as the most efficient and ecological.

The main subject of the Project is the construction of a new gas cogeneration unit based on a set of gas engines, supplemented by a renewable energy source in the form of solar panels at the existing plant. The Project also includes the construction of the necessary gas connection and connection to the electricity grid, along with all the associated infrastructure.

The Project also assumes carrying out "soft" activities aimed at increasing knowledge of the functioning of the Norwegian and EEA Funds and their objectives, as well as increasing public awareness of energy efficiency, the use of green fuels and the impact of the Project on the environment.

Implementation period

The agreement for the project's co-financing was signed on 10th December 2021 and the planned completion date is 30th April 2024.
