On 22 March 2024, the experts of the World Heritage Centre (WHC) and the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) completed their Reactive Monitoring Mission to the Polish part of the Białowieża Forest World Heritage Site.
One of the objectives of the Mission was to evaluate the impact of the border barriers on the Polish and Belarusian sides on the integrity of the World Heritage Site.
The experts of the World Heritage Centre and IUCN visited the areas managed by the Białowieża National Park and the Browsk, Białowieża and Hajnówka Forest Districts, including the border road strip. Moreover, they met with the representatives of the local community and the local governments at municipality and county levels, in the areas in which the World Heritage Site is situated. The experts also held talks with the representatives of the institutions managing the Białowieża Forest Site, i.e. the Białowieża National Park and State Forests, as well as with the representatives of the services operating at the border, i.e. the Border Guard and the Polish Army.
