Wooden buildings

19.05.2020

Wooden buildings is a strategic project of the Ministry of Climate. There is a potential in increasing the number of wooden houses, especially multi-residential buildings, that are constructed in Poland.

The project is an element of the sustainable development policy. We believe that he development of wooden construction shall contribute to:

  • improving the carbon balance by reducing CO2 emissions from the production of building materials used in construction, such as cement, polystyrene, brick, steel, plastic, etc.  - wood as a building material has a low carbon footprint;
  • improving the energy balance, by reducing the energy consumption needed to maintain buildings and promoting the efficient use of wood resource as a building material;
  • counteracting climate change - wood is a CO2 storehouse, which reduces its concentration in the atmosphere.

In Poland, despite a rich tradition of wooden construction, the use of wooden structures has been abandoned for several decades. In contrast to many other European countries, there is a general misunderstanding of wood construction technology, and a large degree of distrust among architects, engineers, builders and the public. However, there is great a potential in the supply chain to increase the domestic supply of wood housing if the market is persuaded to adopt these construction methods. More than 5,000 wooden houses of different types are built annually in Poland, however most of them are currently exported, mainly to Germany, Sweden, and Norway.

That is why, as part of this project, comprehensive activities related to the removal of barriers for and the development of the wooden construction sector will be carried out.

The project foresees the implementation of tasks in the following areas:

  • financial and institutional (measures aimed at developing and implementing support mechanisms for the wooden buildings),
  • legislation and standardisation (measures aimed at reducing legal barriers for the development of the wooden buildings market),
  • education and information (education and information campaign, training, promotion of good practices, international cooperation).
