Construction of the barrier on the Polish-Belarusian border will start in December, says the Head of the Polish Ministry of the Interior and Administration
15.11.2021
The barrier on the Polish-Belarusian border will be built by large companies with comprehensive market experience; relevant contracts will be signed by 15 December of this year and will be fully open to the public; the part of the border where the barrier is to be built will be divided into four sections; work on the respective sections will run 24/7 on three shifts – these were the main decisions made during the first meeting of the Team for the preparation and implementation of state border protection installations.
The project which we must complete is of absolute strategic importance and a priority in the context of the security of the State and its citizens
stressed Mariusz Kamiński, Minister of the Interior and Administration and head of the Team for the preparation and implementation of state border protection installations.
Marek Chodkiewicz, plenipotentiary for the preparation and implementation of state border protection installations, presented the technical details of the barrier to be built on the border with Belarus. He said the barrier would be based on a steel structure.
According to the schedule presented by the plenipotentiary, contracts with companies responsible for the construction of the barrier will be signed by 15 December of this year. The contracts will be open to the public, so that every citizen can view them. Work on the border is scheduled to commence this year and last 180 days. The barrier is expected to be complete by the end of the first half of 2022.
The project will be carried out by several contractors working in parallel on four sections. Due to the scale and pace of the work, the negotiations are being held with large companies recommended by the Polish Association of Construction Industry Employers. These companies offer appropriate implementation capacities and specialist equipment. Their experience in large line investment projects is also important. Due to the urgent and strategic nature of the project, the contracts will include an obligation to carry out the work on the border over three shifts 24 hours a day.
Stretching along more than 180 km of the border with Belarus, the barrier will be 5.5 metres high, including 5 metres of steel poles with concertina wire on top to frustrate any attempts to cross to the other side. It will also use modern electronic border management methods (motion detectors and CCTV cameras along the entire border).
