"Works are now underway on the construction of an electronic barrier along the Polish-Russian border. When finished, it is going to be a state-of-the-art solution, not unlike the one on the border with Belarus, allowing us a full overview of everything happening at the border. The works are due to be completed this fall,"

- Minister Mariusz Kamiński announced.

The Minister of Interior and Administration also referred to the issue of safety and support for the ongoing operations of the Border Guard.

"Our eastern border will be perfectly prepared for defence against all kinds of illegal activities, including crises engineered by our eastern neighbours. I am deeply convinced that this will be the best secured border in the European Union,"

- he added.

The construction of an electronic barrier along the border with the Kaliningrad region started on Tuesday, April 18. The work started along the section of the border overseen by the Border Guard posts in Bezledy and Sepopol.

The 200-kilometre-long barrier will be divided into twelve functional sections, including some 2,000 camera poles, 3,000 video cameras and 700 kilometres of power, communication and detection lines.

The work will be carried out by the Poznań–based TELBUD S.A. company. More than 373 million PLN has been earmarked for all the required works, including 42 million PLN for paving the selected priority sections of the border. The barrier will support the activities of Border Guard officers, helping them detect border crime, illegal migration and smuggling of goods.

The works are planned to conclude on 30 September this year.
