20.09.2021

The second Polish-Lithuanian intergovernmental consultations were held in Warsaw on Friday (17 September), led by Poland’s Prime Minister, Mateusz Morawiecki, and Lithuania’s Prime Minister, Ingrida Šimonytė. As part of the bilateral talks, the head of the Polish Ministry of Interior Mariusz Kamiński met with the Minister of Interior of the Republic of Lithuania, Agnė Bilotaitė.

Intergovernmental consultations

We agreed that at this time, the protection of our borders with Belarus is an absolute priority for Poland and Lithuania

- Minister Mariusz Kaminski emphasised.

The talks were also attended by Deputy Ministers Bartosz Grodecki and Arnoldas Abramavičius, and by the heads of the border services, Major General Tomasz Praga and General Rustamas Liubajevas.

During the bilateral talks between the ministers of interior, the situation on the Polish and Lithuanian borders with Belarus was discussed. Minister Mariusz Kamiński noted that the meeting with the Lithuanian party was taking place during a special period: ‘A hybrid attack with elements of disinformation carried out by our neighbour for almost four months, aimed at destabilisation of our borders and thus the borders of the European Union’. The ministers jointly acknowledged that both countries are particularly in favor of solutions aimed at protecting the so-called ‘green’ external border of the European Union in the event of a serious threat to public order or internal security. In this context, the importance of effective response tools at the national level, but also of a strong EU response, was emphasised. It was noted that in political terms, the European Union shares the opinion about the situation on the EU’s eastern borders presented by Poland and Lithuania.

Both parties emphasised the partnership between Poland and Lithuania in the field of internal affairs, migration, and border protection matters. The Lithuanian party also expressed its thanks for the assistance provided by Poland in the current situation related to the migration pressure caused by the Belarusian regime.

At the end of the intergovernmental consultations, a Joint Declaration of the Prime Ministers of Poland and Lithuania was adopted.
