Polish aid to Ukraine after destruction of the dam on the Dnipro River
07.06.2023
Following the destruction of the dam on the Dnipro River in Nova Kakhovka, Minister of the Interior and Administration Mariusz Kamiński, in consultation with Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki, decided to provide water tankers and high-capacity pumps as aid to Ukraine. The Ukrainian side requested this aid through the Emergency Response Coordination Centre (ERCC).
In view of the dramatic situation of the civilian population in the aftermath of Russia destroying the dam on the Dnipro River in Nova Kakhovka, together with Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki, we decided to donate 10 water tankers with a capacity of 18,000 litres each and 10 high-capacity pumps. I would like to express my gratitude to the State Fire Service for its involvement and commitment,
the minister said.
Ukraine has requested aid through the EU Civil Protection Mechanism as one of its member states. Poland has been advocating for supporting Ukraine in joining the Mechanism since 2022. Thanks to the personal involvement of the Minister of the Interior and Administration Mariusz Kamiński, Ukraine was eventually admitted. The State Fire Service serves as the national point of contact for the EU Civil Protection Mechanism for humanitarian aid and rescue operations.
In the coming days, the Polish side will provide Ukraine with aid, including 10 water tankers with a capacity of 18,000 litres each, as well as 10 high-capacity pumps with a throughput of 12,000 litres/minute each. Additionally, Poland will also supply a flood relief container with equipment and boats.
On the morning of Tuesday, 6 June, the Russian forces destroyed the dam of a hydroelectric power plant on the Dnipro River in the occupied town of Nova Kakhovka in the Kherson Oblast. Ukrainian authorities have ordered the evacuation of thousands of people from the affected areas. The hydroelectric power plant was destroyed beyond repair, while numerous villages and hundreds of homes were flooded.
