- announced the Deputy Minister.
Brig. Gen. Wioleta Gorzkowska, Deputy Commander in Chief of the Border Guard, stressed that the construction of the barrier is a strategic investment.
It is the largest construction investment in the history of the Border Guard. I am very glad that in such a short period of time - within two months - we managed to work out solutions and contract the construction of the barrier
- she said.
The Deputy Commander of the Border Guard also presented details of building the installation on the border with Belarus.
The barrier construction will be carried out over 186 km and will be divided into four sections. This is to enhance shortening the work time as much as possible and to conduct parallel construction works
- stated Brig. Gen. Wioleta Gorzkowska.
Separate orders were concluded for steel elements and construction works as part of building the installation. The execution of the steel spans was entrusted to a consortium of three companies - POLIMEX MOSTOSTAL SA, which is the consortium leader, and the companies: MOSTOSTAL Siedlce Spółka z o.o., Sp.k. and Węglokoks SA. Two contractors will be responsible for the construction works: BUDIMEX SA and the consortium of UNIBEP SA (consortium leader) and BUDREX Spółka z o.o.
Securing the state border
The construction of the barrier on the Poland-Belarus border is the outcome of the Act on the Construction of State Border Protection. The Act, which came into force on 4 November 2021, defines the rules for implementing the installation construction to protect the state border, which is the external border of the European Union at the same time. The solution created a legal basis for the prompt and efficient accomplishment of this investment.
The barrier will be built along approx. 186 km of the border with Belarus. The part of the border where the installation will be carried out has been divided into four sections. BUDIMEX SA will be responsible for constructing the barrier in sections with a total length of 105.55 km (section 1 - 54.82 km and section 2 - 50.73 km). Whereas the consortium of UNIBEP SA and BUDREX Sp. z o.o. will construct the protection system in the sections with a total length of 80.70 km (section 3 - 36.70 km and section 4 - 43.97 km). In each section, the works will be carried out in a three-shift system.
The border protection will be 5.5 metres high: 5 metres consisting of steel poles, topped with a coil of wire so that one cannot cross to the other side. Modern electronic methods of border management (motion sensors along the entire border, cameras) will also be applied. The basic elements to build the barrier will be steel spans. More than 50 thousand tonnes of steel will be used. This includes more than 40 thousand pieces of steel spans.
The total amount contracted for the execution of all works is over PLN 1 billion 233 million. These funds will be used to finance the execution of steel spans (over PLN 589 million) and construction works (over PLN 644 million).
