Transport of corps or ashes to Poland

To transport the corps/ashes of a deceased form Norway to Poland you will need to receive from Consular Section of the Embassy of the Republic of Poland a proper certificate for transportation.

To issue that certificate the complete set of following documents are required by Polish law:

  1. death certificate - Melding om dødsfall from lensmann or tingrett (issued for Folkeregister). In the case of deaths occurring in the district of Oslo document is issued by Byfogdembete. In other cases, the competent authority to issue the document is Tingrett or Lensmann (police chief). In the case of a child born dead it is sufficient to have a document confirming the fact issued by the Norwegian Police.

NOTE:  the original of death certificate has to be legalized with the Norwegian Apostille which you can get at the office of Fylkesmann or at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Oslo,

  1. medical certificate of death - Legeerklæring om dødsfall from hospital or from a doctor who certify the death,
  2. Smitteattest – a certificate from hospital that death was not caused by an infectious disease,
  3. Laissez-passer by Police for the coffin issued to exit Norway – poliitillatelse-frakt (might not be required in case of urn – you need to clarify it with police),
  4. Certificate by the funeral service stating the corpse/remains were prepared for transport, folded and enclosed in a metal casket/urn, and the casket/urn contains nothing but a corpse/ashes,
  5. Consent for local Polish authorities for entry and burial the body/ashes in Poland (Starosta or Prezydent Miasta),
  6. Power of attorney from the family to prepare the documents (in case when documents are preparing by third person),
  7. Consular fee is referred to in item 4.02 of the Consular Fees Table and should be paid in cash or by bank transfer. From 1 January 2024, the fee is 563 NOK.

The above documents are required by Polish law. There is no possibility to issue a certificate while one of upper documents is missing or improper.

In addition (if necessary) the fee for the translation of the death certificate in accordance with item 6.10 of the Consular Fees Table. From 1 January 2024, the fee is 563 NOK.

Once you receive the consul’s certificate originals of all these documents have to be sent to Poland accompanying the coffin or urn.
