Issues addressed
The main problem that NeuroRec solves is the accessibility of individual remote daily rehabilitation for people affected by stroke. According to EU data, approximately 2.5 million people suffer a stroke in Europe every year, and post-stroke rehabilitation is very long and requires constant assistance from a rehabilitator. Thanks to the new method, the patient can perform a large part of the rehabilitation independently at home, using a rented device, and thanks to easy exercises, automation of the rehabilitation process and simple instructions, virtually everyone can exercise every day, which can significantly speed up the rehabilitation process.
Project beneficiaries
The main beneficiaries of the technology are people who have had a stroke.
Other potential indications for using the NeuroRec device:
- preparation for prosthesis after amputation and help with phantom pain;
- spinal cord injuries and nerve palsies;
- neurodegenerative diseases – Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and others;
- demyelinating diseases – multiple sclerosis and others;
- neurodevelopmental disorders – autism, cerebral palsy and others.
Major implementation challenges
The biggest challenge was the design of an advanced muscle stimulator which, like other electrostimulators, is not a voltage source, but a current source. This solution allows for a significant improvement in safety and in control over the process of muscle stimulation.
Our advice to other applicants
Look for projects that can be commercialized relatively easily and start by building a “minimum viable product” (MVP) so that you can test it with end users.
