Issues addressed

The result of the project is a new shock-absorbing frame for gravel bicycles, made from the latest composite and bio-composite materials. The project solves the technological problem related to vibration during cycling. The shock absorption is achieved through elastic deformation of the frame and fork (compressive medium) and the use of an elastomer as a damper substitute. The rear shock absorption system is based on an eccentric cam which produces repeatable movement of the deformed elements and additionally stiffens the structure. The front shock absorption system is based on a deformable element of the front fork resembling a leaf spring, as the spring, and an elastomer, as the damper.

The damping element of the frame is hidden in the eccentric cam which has been integrated into the silhouette of the bike with a classic outline. The cam is located near the junction of the top tube of the front triangle and the seat tube. The spring element is the rear triangle of the frame. The damping element of the front fork is located in the handlebar tube. The spring element is a deformable element made of two triangles, resembling a spring, placed perpendicular to the fork axis, along the lower tube of the front triangle of the frame. Its use does not disturb the silhouette of a classic-shaped bicycle.

Project beneficiaries

The project’s addressees are one of the most dynamically growing consumer groups: advanced users, or even “prosumers”, who expect the best possible performance and comfort over long distances from their bike. They are mostly people aged 30-55, enthusiasts practicing strenuous road and mountain biking, taking part in cycling competitions, residents of large and medium-sized cities. A gravel bike is often the second or third bike they use. A customer interested in this type of product is a very conscious user, has extensive knowledge about the product and has high requirements for it. Before purchasing, this person analyzes and compares bicycles, pays attention to details, and looks for the latest technological solutions supported by research and tests. The current user will also be a consumer for the bicycle developed in the project, and in the future, a consumer looking for another gravel bike. The frame designed as part of the project is made of recyclable materials, which is important in the purchasing process for this group of consumers.
