Protection of non-ferrous metals against corrosion by preparations containing gemini surfactants
Protection of non-ferrous metals against corrosion by preparations containing gemini surfactants

What problem is addressed by the project?

Gemini surfactants are a unique new group of cationic surfactants with excellent emulsifying, solubilising, dispersing, anti-corrosive and antimicrobial properties. The efficacy of gemini surfactants in each of the ranges mentioned is several orders of magnitude better than that of their monomeric analogues. The ability to obtain gemini surfactants with the desired hydrophilic-hydrophobic balance allows their properties to be fully exploited.

The multifunctional action of gemini surfactants at low concentrations and their limited aquatic toxicity allows these compounds to be classified as substances that meet the Greenolution idea's principles, which is of fundamental importance in sustainable development.

The project demonstrates the effectiveness of gemini surfactants as corrosion inhibitors against non-ferrous and ferrous metals in environments with varying pH values and salinity levels. The use of gemini surfactants as corrosion inhibitors is important in the chemical industry, automotive industry, equipment and plant washing processes in acidic environments and seawater desalination plants. Due to their antimicrobial properties, gemini surfactants are an important aspect of research and application against biocorrosion of the petrochemical industry, caused by sulphur bacteria, which is a primary threat in oil production and transportation processes. Thanks to their multifunctional properties - detergent, dispersant, anti-corrosive and antimicrobial - gemini surfactants are a conditioning component for petrol and diesel oils.

Who uses the project results?

Gemini surfactants are modern, unique, organic corrosion inhibitors with great application potential in the chemical industry, petrochemical industry, fuel transport and storage, mining, seawater desalination, automotive industry (hydraulic fluids and liquids), equipment and plant washing with acidic preparations, liquid fuel conditioning.
