Issues addressed

The “Heating Plant of the Future – Euros Energy HC Plant” is a full-scale demonstrator of zero-emission heat production and seasonal heat storage technologies for the transformation of the heating sector. Euros Energy technology has great scalability and is designed for application in the rapid construction and expansion of heating infrastructure. This is crucial in the face of the dramatic needs for modernization and decarbonization of district heating. The solution, thanks to its flexibility and scalability, can be implemented in county capital towns of various sizes, both in existing and new systems. In larger networks, elements of our system can be used to support more remote parts of the heating infrastructure. Our technology based on heat pumps, hybrid solar collectors and large inexpensive pit thermal energy storage (PTES) facilities allows for almost complete decarbonization, which is consistent with the policy of the European Green Deal. This flexible approach allows the technology to be adapted to different local needs and conditions, which accelerates the process of building and expanding heating infrastructure, supporting the transition to renewable energy sources. The “Heating Plant of the Future – Euros Energy HC Plant” in Lidzbark Warmiński was built within 18 months.

Project beneficiaries

The first zero-emission „Heating Plant of the Future – Euros Energy HC Plant” was built in Lidzbark Warmiński and supplies heat and domestic hot water to residential buildings with an area of almost 30,000 m2 in the Astronomów Estate. The result of the project – the full-scale technology demonstrator – can benefit the entire heating industry and local governments, especially at the level of county capital towns where heating systems require thorough renovation.

Major implementation challenges

  1. Maximum use of locally available renewable energy resources and 100% electric power supply from a photovoltaic farm. The result is full decarbonization and zero emissions, i.e. the actual achievement of climate neutrality.
  2. The plant ensures 100% renewable energy in the balance and a supply temperature of 80°C, meeting the requirements for modernized heating systems.
  3. Construction and launch of the largest seasonal heat storage system in Europe, integrating seasonal energy storage in a low-temperature borehole thermal energy storage (BTES) and in a high-temperature pit thermal energy storage (PTES). We have implemented the first and only seasonal PTES in Poland.
