What problem does our project solve?

The aim of the project was to design and build a rail bus demonstrator, suitable for operation on both electrified and non-electrified lines.

The demonstrator of the new rail vehicle platform named 'PLUS' was made within the scope of the project as a two-unit diesel-electric multiple unit, designed for passenger services in regional, agglomeration or long-distance traffic.

The vehicle is powered by the overhead line (3 kV DC) and POWER PACKs with internal combustion engines meeting the latest STAGE V emission standard. This enables electrified and non-electrified routes to be combined.

The modular design of the vehicle makes it possible to adapt it to carriers' needs (number of doors, seats, toilets, etc.). In turn, the vehicle's design allows for the use of innovative power sources in the future: rechargeable batteries or hydrogen cells.

The vehicle was presented at Poland's largest and most prestigious rail transport fair, the TRAKO International Railway Fair in Gdansk in September 2021.

Who is going to benefit from the project results?

The results of the project will primarily benefit passengers on regional, agglomeration and also long-distance rail services. The vehicle allows communication on both electrified and non-electrified lines - without the need to change - which will significantly reduce transport exclusion. The rail bus can be used comfortably by people with disabilities, as well as lovers of ecological unicycles. The vehicle is designed to carry bicycles.

Reduced emissions help to protect the environment, as well as the health of passengers at railway stations and city residents.

Łukasiewicz - IPS "TABOR", by taking part in the innovative project, expanded its competence and also commercialised the result of the project by granting a licence for the solution it had developed. H. Cegielski-FPS Sp. z o.o. has acquired know-how and expanded its market offering. The solutions developed as part of the project were also the subject of two doctoral dissertations.
