What problem does our project solve?
'Treasury of knowledge ...' we conceived in order to combine the seemingly unrelated sciences, natural sciences and humanities in its most basic scope, which, in our opinion, includes knowledge of the culture of the ancient Greeks and Romans and elements of the Latin language. For us, an important problem we decided to tackle was a noticeable absence of knowledge about the culture of the ancient Mediterranean region in the curricula of primary schools (at that time also in the intermediary schools. When we first began conceptualising the curriculum for the project, there was generally not much choice on the educational market when it came to textbooks on classical languages, ancient culture and its reception, dedicated to younger teenagers (especially 11-15 years old). 'Treasury of knowledge', as an educational project, fills this gap by offering the completely free Vocabula Latina textbook and, in addition, provides a range of lesson materials (so-called worksheets) that are not only visually interesting but also reflect newer trends in the didactics of foreign languages and cultural knowledge.
Who will benefit from the outcomes of the project?
The materials produced during the project activities will help teachers of younger adolescent children (11-15 years old) to enrich their lessons on Latin language and ancient culture and to construct interesting lessons on the history of the reception of Greek and Roman antiquity in later times in the various fields of knowledge. The language tasks included in the worksheets and textbook were designed with group work in mind, so they will enable students to improve both their social and linguistic competencies. Short educational videos can be used as teaching aids to learn specialised vocabulary with Latin/Greek etymology, while short presentations of cultural issues can be used as audio-visual commentaries in lessons on the history of culture, including the culture of old-time Gdansk.
