Marek Więckowski, PhD, becomes vice-president of the International Geographical Union

The 35th International Geographical Congress is in session in Dublin. At the meeting held on August 26, new authorities of this organization were elected. Marek Więckowski, PhD – professor at the Institute of Geography and Spatial Planning of the Polish Academy of Sciences – was appointed vice-president of the International Geographical Union.
International Geographical Congress
The congress is organized every 3-4 years by the International Geographical Union (IGU). This year’s 35th edition was organized in Dublin and is held under the theme “Celebrating a world of difference.” The first congress was held in 1871 in Antwerp.
A distinction for Polish geography
At the meeting of the General Assembly of the International Geographical Union held on August 26, new authorities of the organization were elected.
Professor Nathalie Lemarchand of France was elected as president of the International Geographical Union.
Professor of the Institute of Geography and Spatial Planning of the Polish Academy of Sciences, Marek Więckowski, PhD, was elected as Vice-President of IGU.
This is a great honor for Polish geography. Among the nine candidates from Brazil, India, Japan, Poland, the United States, Switzerland, Sweden, Uganda, and the United Kingdom, the following were elected as vice-presidents: Anindita Datta (India), Holly R. Barcus (United States), Bernardo Mançano Fernantes (Brazil).
