Subordinate agencies and related institutions
Currently, there are over 400 public and non-public universities in Poland. Minister of Science and Higher Education supervises the majority of them. These are universities, universities of technology, academies, public vocational colleges and non-public universities. Other units subordinate to the Minister include Polish National Agency for Academic Exchange, National Center for Research and Development and the National Science Centre.
Information System on Higher Education (POL-on)
- collects and shares information on higher education, structure of various institutions, fields of study, students and people connected with science,
- gathers information about the quality of education system,
- monitors material assistance spending,
- controls tuition fees,
- controls employment and selection of education staff
- controls financial reporting

More informationNational Centre for Research and Development (NCBR)
The main task of the National Centre for Research and Development is management and execution of strategic research and development programmes leading directly to the development of innovativeness.
Among the tasks of the National Centre for Research and Development are: support of commercialization and other forms of transfer of scientific research results, management of applied research programs and performance of national security and defense projects.
The centre also attempts to provide young scientists with training and development opportunities by implementing international scientific mobility programmes. Special attention is paid to the participation of young scientists in research programs. The centre enables young researchers to expand their business and intellectual property management skills and to learn how to commercialise research results.
At the same time, by implemented initiatives, it draws attention to the necessity of rasing the R&D staff’s awareness of the importance of industrial property protection to the commercialization of modern solutions and international patent protection opportunities for research units.

NAWA is a new institution that was established on October 1st, 2017. It is set up to coordinate state activties driving the process of internationalization of Polish academic and research institutions. The mission of NAWA is to foster the development of Poland in the area of science and higher education.
NAWA goals:
- support international mobility of students, academics and researchers
- support the process of internationalization of Polish HEIs and research institutions
- promote Polish science and higher education
- promote and popularize teaching of the Polish language

More informationNational Science Centre (NCN)
NCN is a government agency, supervised by the Ministry of Science and Higher Education, set up in 2011 to support basic research in Poland.
Basic research is defined as experimental or theoretical endeavours undertaken to gain new knowledge of the foundations of phenomena and observable facts, without any direct commercial use.
With a budget of over € 320 M a year NCN funds projects in Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences, Life Sciences and Physical Sciences and Engineering. The NCN’s wide competition offer is dedicated to researchers at different stages of their careers.
National Science Centre goals:
- supporting excellent research projects in all fields of science and humanities,
- funding doctoral scholarships and post-doctoral internships,
- financing research projects carried out by experienced researchers aimed at implementing pioneering research important for the development of science,
- inspiring international cooperation in basic research,
- supervising the implementation of the awarded research projects,
- Pre-doctoral and doctoral researchers.
One of the priorities of the Centre is to support and develop the scientific careers of pre-doctoral and doctoral researchers about to embark on a career in research. For this group of researchers the Centre has specifically designed funding schemes such as PRELUDIUM, SONATA, MINIATURA, SONATINA.
