Academic teacher, professor of engineering and technical sciences, local government official.

Prof. Marek Gzik, Ph.D., Eng., a deputy in the Sejm of the Republic of Poland for the 10th term, is a graduate of the Silesian University of Technology. He is a full professor in the field of engineering and technical sciences, specializing in modern technologies for applications in medicine, sports, and defense. He has been associated with his alma mater since 1991. He defended his doctoral thesis with distinction in 2000, obtained a post-doctoral degree in 2010, and was awarded the professorial title in 2015. He has held various positions, serving as the dean of the Faculty of Biomedical Engineering, the only one of its kind in Poland, from 2012 to 2020. Since 2011, he has been the head of the Department of Biomechatronics, and from September 2020 to December 2022, he served as the chair of the Council of the Discipline of Biomedical Engineering. Between 2014 and 2016, he was a member of the rector's college as the rector's plenipotentiary for cooperation with the industry. In 2023, he completed a two-year Master of Business Administration MBA in "Healthcare," organized by the Silesian University of Technology, Nyenrode Business University in the Netherlands, and Philips company.

He is the originator and since 2021 the director of the European HealthTech Innovation Center EHTIC, established at the Silesian University of Technology due to the implementation of a key project in the Silesian region valued at over 100 million PLN, funded by EU funds. This unique research and development center in this part of Europe was created with the support of a strategic partner, Philips, which invested 5 million EUR.

Prof. Marek Gzik, chosen by the Senate of the Silesian Medical University, has held the position of the chair of the university council for the 2021-2024 term. He participates in a wide array of groups associated with scientific, economic, and municipal endeavors. Since 2015, he has been part of the Committee on Biocybernetics and Biomedical Engineering at the Polish Academy of Sciences, serving as its vice-chairman. His membership extends to several scientific and programmatic boards and committees, such as the KOMAG Institute of Mining Technology in Gliwice, where he led the scientific council, the Military Institute of Medicine in Warsaw, the Krakow Institute of Technology, the Prof. Z. Religa Foundation for Cardiac Surgery Development, and Yoshi Innovation S.A. Additionally, he is an honorary member of the Regional Chamber of Commerce.
He is the author and co-author of numerous monographs (6), publications (over 300), and patents (6). He has led and participated in dozens of research and development projects. He has supervised four completed PhD theses. He has undertaken numerous scientific internships and participated in economic missions abroad. In 2017 and 2018, he served as an expert during Regions&Cities - European Week in Brussels. In 2017, at the invitation of the National Institute for Public Health and the Environment, Ministry of Health, Welfare and Sport, he went on a study visit to The Hague, Amsterdam, and Rotterdam in the Netherlands.

Prof. Marek Gzik has extensive experience in local government. From 2014 to 2023, he was a councilor of the Silesian Regional Assembly. Between 2022 and 2023, he served as its chair. He was the initiator and chair of the Ad Hoc Committee for Economy and Innovation. He actively participates in a variety of local government initiatives, including being a member of the Steering Committee of the Regional Innovation Strategy, the Council for Electromobility of the Silesian Voivodeship, and the Scientific Council of the Institute of Regional Studies of the Silesian Library. He also served as the vice-chair of the Ad Hoc Committee for the Transformation of the Region. He was the Silesian Voivodeship's delegate to the General Assembly of the Union of Voivodeships of the Republic of Poland.

Throughout his professional career, he has repeatedly expressed an interest in entrepreneurship and business-related initiatives. For his scientific, organizational, teaching, and local government activities, he has received numerous awards, including the Prof. J. Szmelter Medal Warsaw 2016, the Platinum Laurel of Skills and Competence 2016, the "Athena" award from the Mayor of the City of Zabrze 2017 in the category "Science and Medicine", the Gold Badge of Merit for the Polish Society of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics 2018, the Medal of the 100th Anniversary of the Union of Polish Knights of Malta 2021, and the "Brand of Silesia" 2022 for the EHTIC project. In 2022, the Social Council of the Silesian University of Technology honored Prof. Marek Gzik with a statuette for the best employee of the Silesian University of Technology.
